Drought Tolerant and Deer Resistant Plants for the Rogue Valley

Saturday, November 07, 2015 - 9:00 am

Part of the Winter Dreams Summer Gardens Symposium at RCC

Two of the most common problems in our lovely valley are deer and long, dry summers, but you can still have a beautiful and sustainable garden by making the right plant choices.   Shooting Star Nursery specializes in drought tolerant and deer resistant trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses and will discuss some of the diverse options you have. Christie Mackison, co-owner and landscape designer, will have a unique selection of plants on hand to show and will explain how to care for them and prep the soil for a successful waterwise garden.   Plan that beautiful summer garden by doing your homework and planting in the fall!

Seriously Cool Plants for Serious Gardeners/What's New at the Nursery

Saturday, November 07, 2015 - 10:30 am

Part of the Winter Dreams Summer Gardens Symposium at RCC

Do you want to spice up your garden, but are tired of the same old blah plants you see everywhere? Or are you just an avid plant lover looking for the next addition to your collection?  Every year there are a myriad of new introductions in the nursery scene and it can be difficult to sift through which are worth trying in your own garden.  On the contrary, there are many overlooked plants that have been around for ages that deserve a greater share of the limelight.  Come learn about some of our favorite perennials, shrubs and even a few trees, both new and old.  Plus there are quite a few rare species and selections from here and abroad in alpine regions of the southern hemisphere that really get us excited, and we are lucky enough to have some fantastic specialty nurseries locally and throughout the Pacific Northwest growing these hard-to-come-by gems.  Break out of the formulaic palette that dots the landscapes of every tract house and business and discover a world of fabulous plants, many of which boast the much needed combination of drought tolerance and deer resistance for our ever-challenging environment here in the Rogue Valley.
